ABOUT
Annouk Thys:
Ceramic Artist,
based in Ghent, Belgium
It will not come as a surprise that notions of landscape, time, and the elements of nature appear repeatedly in my work. For in most of my work, ceramic materials such as glaze and porcelain are key components. It was during my studies at LUCA in Ghent (BE) that I discovered the joy in experimenting with these ingredients.
By bringing together different materials, it feels like I can explore their behaviour, how they interact, and how things work. This interplay of experiment, creation, and coincidence – making the underlying processes tangible and showing what usually remains invisible – is what challenges me and creates new forms.
During my residency at the EKWC (European Ceramic Work Centre / NL) I was able to investigate the possibilities of glaze as a sculptural medium: how glazes respond to gravity, time, space and their environment. It is a never-ending and fascinating universe. Throughout my work, I thereby find space to marvel at the world and collect people’s stories … and in that way feel more connected to my environment.
